Photograms & Rayographs
What Are Photograms?A photogram is a fixed shadow of an object. This technique of Camera-Less photography can also be called "Rayographs". Almost everybody has seen a photogram because an x-ay is a photogram. The first real break through in photograms was when x-rays were discovered, these were the first type of photogram ever to exist. Photograms were discovered quite late, after the first world war.

Imogen CunninghamThe photogram artist I found was Imogen Cunningham. The objects that she uses in her photograms are mainly nature related, as in the three photograms that i found two of them are related to seeds and one to leaves. This artists photograms do not have much contrast, they are really quite plain but also very interesting, even though there is not much going on in the photograms. The compositions of her photograms are mainly the same, they are all placed directly in the centre of the photogram.

Man RayMan Ray was an american visual artist, who spent most of his career in France. In his photograms he used a variety of different objects, for example paperclips, springs and nature related objects, throughout his life he was very well known for his "Photograms" which he called "Rayographs". Some words that I would use to describe his photogram's would be unusual, and quite a lot going on. i would use these words because in his photogram's he uses a variety of different objects, and they usually have quite a lot in them. I think that they are quite abstract image's because they are very unusual.

Laszlo Moholy-Nagy was a hungarian painter and photographer as well as a professor in the Bauhaus School. His photograms consisted of many different objects, for example eiffel towers, spirals and many other things. Although his photograms did not have to much going on in them they are still quite interesting. The words that I would use to describe his photogram's would be sparse and empty. I would use these words because he doesn't use lots of objects in one photogram, it seems like he would on use two or three. I think that this photographer's images are mainly naturalistic but sometimes they can be abstract.

My Photogram's (1)I do not think that my photogram's turned out very well. I think that I used the space quite well and they had a good composition, but I don't like how they turned out. I think that the most interesting part of my photogram is the fish, because it has an interesting shape and the outline of it is more faded than the centre of the fish. Although i like the composition of the photo, i do not think that these objects work well together because it looks to crowded. There is also in my opinion not much texture to my photo because the texture did not show up in the photogram. The title that I would give these photogram's would be Taraja.P.Salmon because that is the name of the beautiful fish in these photogram's, this is because the fish is the main focus in these photogram's and I want everyone to know that.

My Photograms(2) I think that my second set of photograms turned out better than my first. I think this because the objects I used in my second set of photograms were more interesting than the first sets objects, in the second set I used a semi-transparent object for more contrast and it came out quite well. The objects I see in these photograms are a semi-transparent pen, a charger lead(tied up), coins, scissors and a spring keyring. I find these objects more interesting than the first because the shapes are more detailed and less boring. The title that I would give these photograms would be Transparent & Opaque because I used transparent and opaque objects in these ones. The way that i would describe this photogram to a person who could not see it would be that there is randomly placed objects with not really any composition.

Cut Up Photogram (1)I cut one of my first photograms up into horizontal lines. I chose this pattern because its really simple but still looks interesting, this pattern also makes it hard to tell what is in the photogram. At the beginning of the photogram the lines are quite thin but as you get to the end the lines get thicker. I hoped that my cut up photogram would have turned out a bit more interesting, but I still think it turned out ok. If I had the chance to redo my cut up photogram I would because I would like to do a better pattern.
